Shop CPSC Toy Safety Tips Before Shopping for Holiday Gifts

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The holidays are here and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has its list. Parents and gift buyers are encouraged to check it twice. Today, CPSC issued its annual holiday safety messages, joined by U.S.Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Safe Kids Worldwide, to remind parents
to be diligent when making holiday shopping choices.

"CPSC, CBP and industry activity has been with one goal in mind, to keep
the toys our children play with the safest in the world" said Acting
Chairman Nancy Nord. "Vigorous inspection of toys, testing and law
enforcement have made toys the safest this season."

For 2007, the Commission has reports of 18 toy-related deaths and CPSC staff estimates that there were about 170,100 hospital emergency-room treated toy-related injuries to children under 15. Most of the deaths were associated with airway obstruction from small toys, drowning, or motor vehicle accidents during play. Most of the injuries were lacerations, contusion and abrasions; the
head and face was the area most frequently affected.

The top 5 toy hazards:

* Scooters and other Riding Toys - Riding toys, skateboards and in-line skates go fast and falls could be deadly. Helmets and safety gear should be worn at all times and be sized to fit.

* Small Balls and other Toys with Small Parts - For children younger than age three, avoid toys with small parts, which can cause choking.

* Balloons - Children under eight yrs. can choke or suffocate on un-inflated or broken balloons. Keep un-inflated balloons from children. Discard broken balloons at once.

* Magnets - For children under age six, avoid building or play sets with small magnets. If magnets or pieces with magnets are swallowed, serious injuries and/or death can occur.

* Chargers and Adapters - Charging batteries should be supervised by adults. Chargers and adapters can pose thermal burn hazards to children.

Once the gifts are open:

* Immediately discard plastic wrappings on toys before they become dangerous play things.

* Keep toys appropriate for older children away from younger siblings.

* Pay attention to instructions and warnings on battery chargers. Some chargers
lack any device to prevent overcharging.

With the increased popularity of second-hand stores and on-line vendors,
gift-givers should be especially vigilant to prevent the sale or purchase of
hazardous products that have been recalled, banned or do not meet current safety standards. Before placing products in the second-hand market, check its recall status at www.cpsc.gov. Buyers should make sure their gifts do not include any of the recalled toys or children's products on CPSC's web site.

Also, at this web site, consumers can keep up-to-date on dangerous products by
signing up to have recall announcements sent directly to their email account.

Infant Death Prompts Recall To Repair 600,000 Drop Side Cribs By Delta
Enterprise; Spring Peg Failure Can Cause Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Delta Enterprise Corp., of New York, N.Y., is announcing the voluntary recall today of about 600,000 drop side cribs. The crib's drop side can detach when the spring peg is not engaged, which can cause an entrapment and suffocation risk to infants and toddlers.

If the spring pegs in the base of each leg of the crib are pushed back into the lower track, the pegs can become nonfunctional. This can cause the drop side to detach from the crib and create a gap that can entrap an infant or toddler.

CPSC staff is aware of a death of an 8-month-old child who suffocated when the drop side of his crib detached. CPSC is also aware of one child entrapment and one incident in which the drop side detached due to a disengaged spring peg.

The recall involves all Delta drop side cribs manufactured prior to 2006 that
use "Crib Trigger Lock with Spring Peg" drop side hardware design. The
recalled model numbers and country of origin include: 4340, 4343, 4520, 4600,
4620, 4624, 4625, 4629, 4660, 4665, 4720, 4750, 4751, 4850, 4855, 4857, 4880,
4920, 4925-2, 4925-2B, 4925-6, 4980, and 8605
. The model number, country of origin and manufacture dates are located on top of the mattress support board.
The recalled cribs have Delta's name and address on the mattress support
boards and Delta's logo on the teether rail.

The cribs, which were made in China, were sold at major retailers nationwide
from January 2000 through January 2007 for between $33 and $200. Cribs currently sold at retail are not involved.

CPSC and Delta urge parents and caregivers to immediately stop using these
cribs and contact Delta to receive a free, easy-to-install repair kit. Call
Delta toll-free at (800) 816-5304 anytime after 5 pm today or log on
www.cribrecallcenter.com to order the free repair kit.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to find a safe, alternative sleep
environment for their child until the repair kit, with new safety pegs, is
safely installed are the recalled cribs.

CPSC would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop side crib parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Any disengagement can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib, especially with tape, wire or rope.

Infant Death Prompts Recall to Repair 985,000 Delta Enterprise Drop Side Cribs;
Missing Safety Pegs Can Cause Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in
cooperation with Delta Enterprise Corp., of New York, New York., is announcing
the voluntary recall to replace missing safety pegs involving 985,000 drop side
cribs. Failure to use or install safety pegs can cause an entrapment and
suffocation risk to infants and toddlers.

When the safety pegs in the base of each leg of the crib are missing from the
lower track, the crib locks can disengage and detach if lowered below the peg
hole, creating a hazardous gap. This gap can lead to the entrapment and
suffocation of an infant or toddler.

CPSC staff is aware of a death of an 8-month-old child who became entrapped and suffocated when the drop side of the crib detached in a reassembled crib where the safety pegs were not installed. CPSC is also aware of two entrapments and
nine disengagement incidents in cribs where the safety pegs were missing.

The recall involves all Delta cribs manufactured in Taiwan or Indonesia, with
the "Crib Trigger Lock with Safety Peg" drop side hardware design.
These model numbers and country of origin can be located on the mattress support
board label: 4320, 4340, 4500, 4520, 4530, 4532, 4540, 4542, 4550, 4551, 4580,
4600, 4620, 4624 (production dates 01/06 thru 11/07), 4640, 4660, 4720, 4735,
4742, 4750 (production dates 01/95 thru 12/00), 4760, 4770, 4780, 4790, 4820,
4840, 4850, 4860, 4880, 4890, 4892, 4900, 4910, 4920, 4925-2, 4925-6, 4930,
4940, 4943, 4944, 4947, 4948, 4949, 4950, 4958, 4963, 4968, 4969, 4980.

The recalled cribs have date codes ranging from 1995 through December 2005 and one model (4624) was made in 2007. The model numbers are located on the top of
the mattress support board.

The cribs, which were made in Taiwan and Indonesia, were sold at major
retailers, including Walmart, Kmart and Target.com from January 1995 through
September 2007 for about $100. These cribs have also been found to be sold
secondhand. Cribs currently sold at retail are not involved.

CPSC and Delta urge parents and caregivers to immediately stop using cribs that
are missing a safety peg on any leg of the crib and contact Delta to receive a
free, easy-to-install repair kit. The kit will include safety pegs in a bold
color and warning labels to be affixed to the mattress board. Consumers with
cribs that have all safety pegs installed may continue to use the cribs;
however, CPSC recommends that these consumers contact Delta for the repair kit
for future assembly purposes. Call Delta toll-free at (1-800-816-5304) anytime
after 5pm today or log on www.cribrecallcenter.com to order the free replacement
kit.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to find a safe, alternative sleep
environment for their child if their recalled crib is missing safety pegs.

CPSC would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or
loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop side crib parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Any disengagement can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib,
especially with tape, wire or rope.

3.  Defects Identified by CPSC Early Warning System Prompt Crib Warning to
Parents; CPSC to consider rulemaking to address crib defects

Release #09-018

Defects Identified by CPSC Early Warning System Prompt Crib Warning to Parents:
CPSC to consider rulemaking to address crib defects

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging
parents and caregivers to closely inspect the hardware and stability of their
cribs to ensure all parts are in place and secure. The warning by the CPSC comes
after the agency's Early Warning System has identified concerns with the
durability of cribs, especially those with drop sides that can disengage and
lead to dangers of entrapment and strangulation.

Since the creation of the CPSC Early Warning System in fall of 2007, the agency
has conducted five crib recalls where the hardware was broken, missing or
otherwise failed to function. Cribs with drop sides are the type most likely to
experience hardware problems. They contain more moving parts and have more
non-rigid connections than static, or non-drop side cribs. In many cases the
drop side corners disengage from the tracks located on the crib ends, or safety
stops become nonfunctional permitting the drop side to detach from the crib.
These types of defects are often undetected by parents or caregivers and can
worsen when the baby pushes or leans against the side of the crib.

"The CPSC is committed to making sure a baby's sleep environment is as
safe as possible," said Acting Chairman Nancy Nord. "It is that
ongoing commitment that is driving the agency to explore new crib requirements
and educate the public of the dangers associated with some cribs."

Safety Tips for all cribs:

* Parents should not use any crib with missing, broken or loose parts.

* Hardware should be inspected from time to time and tightened to keep the crib
sturdy.

* When using a drop side crib parents should check to make sure the drop side
or any other moving part operates smoothly on its track.

* Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Any
disengagement can create a gap and entrap a child.

* Do not try to repair any side of the crib without manufacturer approved
hardware or with tape, wire or rope.

* Putting a broken side up against the wall does not solve the problem and can
often make it worse.

While the mandatory and voluntary crib standards have succeeded in preventing
many deaths and injuries, the agency staff believes the performance requirements
can be strengthened to deal with the problems identified by the Early Warning
System. Therefore, agency staff will be recommending that the This message is from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,
an independent federal regulatory agency, located at 4330 East West
Highway, Bethesda, MD 20814  Toll-free hotline: (800) 638-2772

Thank you.

Commission vote to
issue an Advanced Notice of Proposed (ANPR) rulemaking to examine and assess
potential design and durability issues and possible mandatory performance
requirements to prevent future entrapments and strangulations to children. If
approved, the ANPR will seek input and information about hardware systems, other
hardware issues, assembly and instructional problems and wood quality/strength
issues for cribs with both stationary and drop side construction.

Safety in the Nursery and Around the House for Baby Safety Month Pillows Pose One of the Greatest Dangers Where Babies Sleep

As parents prepare for a new baby with love and care, CPSC
urges keeping safety in the mix. One area of great concern for the CPSC is
pillow use in cribs. The CPSC is urging all parents to forego putting any kind
of pillows in the crib due to the high risk of suffocation and entrapment. The
CPSC is aware of at least 47 infant deaths between January 2006 and May 2008 associated with pillow use in the sleeping environment. In the 16 years between January 1992 and May 2008, pillows and cushions have been associated with 531 infant deaths.

"Parents should be especially vigilant when preparing for a new
baby," said Acting Chairman Nancy Nord. "Babies represent our most
precious and vulnerable population."
To reduce the risk of SIDS and suffocation, place baby to sleep on his or her
back in a crib that meets current safety standards.

To prevent suffocation never use a pillow as a mattress for baby to sleep on or to prop baby's head or neck. Infants can strangle to death if their bodies pass through gaps between loose components, broken slats and other parts of the crib and their head and neck become entrapped in the space.

Do not use old, broken or modified cribs.
Regularly tighten hardware to keep sides firm.

Infants can suffocate in spaces between the sides of the crib and an ill
fitting mattress; never allow a gap larger than two finger widths at any point between the sides of the crib and the mattress.

Never place a crib near a window with blind or curtain cords; infants can
strangle on the cords.

Safety Around the House - Properly set up play yards according to manufacturers' directions. Only use the mattress provided with the play yard. Do not add extra mattresses, pillows or cushions to the play yard, which can cause a suffocation hazard for infants.

Look for a toy chest that has a support that will hold the hinged lid open in
any position in which it is placed or buy one with a detached lid or doors.

Small Parts - For children younger than age three, avoid toys with small parts,
which can cause choking.

Magnets - For children younger than age eight, avoid building sets with small
magnets. If magnets or pieces with magnets are swallowed, serious injuries
and/or death can occur.

Select toys to suit the age, abilities, skills and interest level of the

Infants Strangled to Death in Simplicity Bassinets: CPSC Urges Consumers To Stop Using Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 Convertible “Close-Sleeper”.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging parents and caregivers to stop using convertible “close-sleeper/bedside sleeper” bassinets manufactured by Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa. CPSC has learned that on August 21, 2008, a 5-month-old girl from Shawnee, Kan. was strangled to death when she became entrapped between the bassinet’s metal bars. This is the second strangulation death CPSC has learned of in the co-sleeper bassinets. On September 29, 2007, a 4-month-old girl from Noel, Mo. became entrapped in the metal bars of the bassinet and died.

The Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets contain metal bars spaced farther apart than 2 3/8 inches, which is the maximum distance allowed under the federal crib safety standard. The metal bars are covered by an adjustable fabric flap which is attached by velcro. The fabric is folded down when the bassinet is converted into a bed-side co-sleeping position. If the velcro is not properly re-secured when the flap is adjusted, an infant can slip through the opening and become entrapped in the metal bars and suffocate. This warning does not cover bassinets produced in recent months that have fabric permanently attached over the lower bar.

Due to the serious hazard these bassinets pose to babies, CPSC urges all
consumers to share this safety warning with day care centers, consignment
stores, family and friends to ensure that no child is placed to sleep in a
Simplicity convertible bassinet covered by this warning. The Commission voted, using its new authorities in the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, to release this warning upon making a finding that the health and safety of the public require immediate notice.
